The Art of Understanding

In six artist-led workshops supported by a psychotherapist, and research interviews, young people were encouraged to reflect on feelings and experiences through experimentation with different art techniques and to consider notions of wellbeing and mental health within their own languages and culture. Using the artwork they created and the audio of the interviews we created this film.

The Art of Understanding is an interdisciplinary research project supported by the City as Lab initiative. It builds on Professor Jo McIntyre's Art of Belonging research and brings together experts in refugee education, language, cultural heritage, and digital mental health from across The University of Nottingham. The project was run in partnership with the Nottingham Education Sanctuary Team (NEST), part of Nottingham HOPE Academy, a unique educational provision which supports young people from refugee or asylum-seeking backgrounds, newly arrived in Nottingham.

Thanks to all the young people who shared their stories.

From the very beginning, Isolde and team listened to our brief, taking the time to understand the nuances of our data, our intentions, and the voices behind the work. They translated our work into something sensitive and powerful, far beyond what we could have imagined. What stood out most was the care they took with our original artwork and the voices of our young people. Every element was treated with respect and thoughtfulness, and it was clear throughout the process that they understood the responsibility of holding those stories. Their ability to step into our canvasses, bringing the material to life, and staying true to its spirit was remarkable. The whole journey with Woven Ink felt careful, considered and genuinely supportive. The final piece is a testament to their artistic skill, their integrity, and their incredible sensitivity.
